Avoid shadows and glare.

How to photograph your catch

Lay the fish on a flat, plain surface rather than holding it up.
Include the whole fish: the closed mouth and the full tail must both be in frame.
Keep hands, nets and rods off the body — anything across the fish blocks measurement.
Shoot square-on from above. A photo taken down the length of the fish reads short.
Keep the reference object in the same plane as the fish, not propped or held closer.
Avoid glare on wet scales; move into shade rather than turning the flash on in sunlight.
One fish per photo. Several fish means choosing one before anything can be measured.
